Heads Up: Traffic Control Measures Coming

Crews are tentatively scheduled to begin installing “roller-compacted concrete” (RCC) on Fulton Road in early April, 2023 (schedule dependent on weather). During that period of work, additional traffic control measures will be put into place, with potentially significant temporary traffic delays anticipated. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Piner High School Bus Stop

As of last summer, the northbound bus stop at Piner High School is temporarily relocated to just north of the school’s main entrance. Work is underway on the new bus stop at the original location with reopening estimated for this winter. For general bus service information please visit Santa Rosa CityBus.

Project Description

This project will widen, reconstruct, and rehabilitate one mile of Fulton Road between Guerneville Road and Piner Road, transforming it into an updated, four-lane regional/arterial street, as envisioned in the 2035 Santa Rosa General Plan.

Project Benefits

Measure M The reconstructed roadway segment will improve the safe and efficient flow of traffic with two lanes in each direction, along with a center median and left turn or two-way center turn lanes. To improve comfort levels for bicyclists and pedestrians, Class II bicycle lanes and expanded, ADA-accessible sidewalks will be installed on both sides of the street. Once complete, this area will have improved circulation, safety, and overall connectivity. Drainage facilities and stormwater quality features are included, plus enhanced aesthetics with drought-tolerant median and roadside plantings.

Overall Schedule/Hours of Construction

The project got underway in late June 2022 and is anticipated to continue for approximately 18 – 24 months. Please note that this schedule is subject to change depending on weather, unanticipated circumstances, and seasonal access restrictions to creek areas. Work will typically take place 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday. On occasion, if deemed necessary and as approved by the City, periodic night work would be from 8:30 pm to 5:00 am. Prior notice will be given for night work, and if periodic weekend work is needed.

What to Expect During Construction

This construction includes significant roadway excavation, widening, paving, landscaping, traffic signal installation, culvert installation, utility upsizing, and utility relocations. As with all large construction projects, there will be unavoidable disruptions to nearby neighbors and to motorists traveling in the area – we apologize in advance for noise, dust, lane closures, traffic delays, and any other impacts or inconveniences.

The project includes the removal of trees and fences along this segment of Fulton Road to allow for the widening (per prior agreements with adjacent property owners). Trees will be replaced. There will be on-street parking restrictions in various areas. Access to driveways in the project area will be maintained; however, there will be times when excavation or paving work will temporarily limit access, potentially up to several hours. Trash/recycling collection, package delivery, bus service, and public safety vehicles will be accommodated.

When driving in the area, always be aware of construction crews and equipment, flaggers, special signage, slower traffic, and rough roadway. Follow all special directions from signs and crews, and never travel faster than is safe for the conditions. If possible, use an alternate route to avoid traffic delays.

As part of the project, the contractor is required to strictly adhere to rigorous regulations for the protection of wildlife, its habitat, and the two creeks which cross Fulton Road in the project area.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to widen and improve this important roadway. You can get more information about this project on the City of Santa Rosa’s Fulton Road Project Page.
