Fulton Road Improvements Project now underway
Work is underway on the Fulton Road Improvements Project. This project will widen, reconstruct, and rehabilitate one mile of Fulton Road between Guerneville Road and Piner Road, transforming it into an updated, four-lane regional/arterial street, as well as provide many other improvements.
Benefits include improved circulation, safety, and overall connectivity, enhanced sidewalks, ADA accessibility compliance, and bike lanes. Drainage infrastructure and permeable landscaping, planters, and swales for improved stormwater filtering and drainage are included, plus enhanced aesthetics with drought-tolerant median and roadside plantings.
Upcoming construction
(NOTE: all schedules are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances; dates shown are anticipated start dates):
- June 27 – tree and fence removal will begin along the full length of the project (fence removal is per prior agreements with adjacent property owners). This work is anticipated to continue for one-to-two weeks. Trees will be replaced near the end of the project as part of the overall landscaping improvements.
- July 1 – demolition of northbound shoulder areas from Jenes Lane to the north access to Piner High School, followed by underground and surface work anticipated to continue through late December.
- July 5 – demolition of northbound shoulder areas from Wishing Well Lane to Jenes Lane, followed by additional underground and surface work continuing to mid-August.
- July 5 – demolition of southbound shoulder areas from the north access of Piner High School north to Quail Hollow Drive, followed by underground and surface work anticipated to continue into mid-December.
- July 5 – demolition of southbound shoulder areas from Appletree Drive to Wishing Well Lane, followed by underground and surface work anticipated to continue into late September.
- July 6 – demolition of southbound shoulder areas from Jenes Lane to the north access to Piner High School, followed by additional underground and surface work continuing into late October.
In addition, crews are continuing potholing (small excavations in the roadway to identify locations of various utilities and gain other information) along the full length of the project through late July, along with installation of construction fence, and other preparation work. If traveling in the area, please exercise additional caution and be aware of work crews, flaggers, special traffic signage, and heavy equipment.
Bus stop notice: the northbound bus stop at Piner High School will be temporarily taken out of service next week, for an estimated two months. During this time, please use the northbound bus stops at Quail Hollow Drive or Appletree Drive. For general bus service information please visit Santa Rosa CityBus.
Project schedule
The project is expected to continue for approximately 18 – 24 months. Please note that this schedule is subject to change depending on weather, unanticipated circumstances, and seasonal access restrictions to creek areas. Work will typically take place 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday. On occasion, if deemed necessary and as approved by the City, periodic night work would be from 8:30 pm to 5:00 am. Prior notice will be given for night work, and if periodic weekend work is needed.
Construction notes
As with all large construction projects, there will be unavoidable disruptions to nearby neighbors and to motorists traveling in the area – we apologize in advance for noise, dust, lane closures, traffic delays, and any other impacts or inconveniences. When driving, walking, or biking in the area, always be aware of construction crews and equipment, flaggers, special signage, slower traffic, and rough roadway. Use an alternate route if possible, and allow for additional time to get to and from your destination.
Access to driveways in the project area will be maintained; however, there will be times when excavation or paving work will temporarily limit access, potentially up to several hours. Trash/recycling collection, package and mail delivery, bus service, and public safety vehicles will be accommodated. As needed, mailboxes which are within the work zone directly on Fulton Road will be removed/relocated closer to the property, out of the project footprint. This will take place as the project proceeds, and crews will make every effort to notify residents one-to-two days prior to the necessary relocation.
